About Goals

What is a Goal? As you know, a goal is a statement that describes the resolution of a problem or the achievement of an opportunity. A goal may focus on a result, like getting a certain grade in a class or on a process, like learning how to make a good presentation at work.By setting goals, you both define a target and set one or more milestones to guide you on progress. Measuring your progress allows you to make adjustments in effort and actions to assure you can achieve the target you've set.

Goals require actions. Setting an action plan is an time-proven approach to working on those things that are important and will help you reach towards your goals. Action Plans give you a systematic way to accomplish the activities and efforts necessary to reach your goals. By defining the action plan, you are analyzing what it will take to reach your goal of solving a problem or obtaining an opportunity. The process of defining the way you will reach your goal will reinforce clarity and confidence needed to accomplish the goal. This approach tends to create a self-fulfilling prophecy and helps you to build momentum. As we know, kinetic friction requires greater force to get an object moving and once moving, less energy is needed to overcome dynamic friction. Goals follow the same physics-- once momemtum or "traction" begins, progress is not far behind.

S.M.A.R.T. Goals - The better that you define your goals, the more likely you will be able to achieve them. A popular goal definition model, the S.M.A.R.T. model, can be helpful to review. Write goals that are S.M.A.R.T.:

S - specific
M - measurable
A - actionable
R - realistic
T - timely

Action Plans Format. While there are many ways to set action plans, here is a simple one to keep track of what you plan to do to accomplish your goals.

WHAT - what you plan to do, a specific action step, but not too detailed
WHO - Who is responsible to achieve that "what"
WHEN- when the task or step will be completed
HELP FROM - as it says, who will provide help, if needed
STATUS - progress against the action item or task
